Falls Prevention Summit Aims:

The summit will focus on “reducing inpatient falls, and harm from inpatient falls”, as well as providing an opportunity to learn from trusts who have developed effective inpatient falls prevention programmes.

This year’s gathering will build on knowledge gained from the 2022 National Audit of Inpatient Falls report which stressed the importance of a high-quality Multi-Factorial Risk Assessment (MFRA) as part of a falls prevention strategy.

What is the National Audit of Inpatient Falls?

The National Audit of Inpatient Falls (NAIF) audits the “delivery and quality of care for patients over 60 who fall and sustain a hip or thigh fracture when in acute, mental health, community and specialist NHS trusts/health boards.”

Their repot defines a Multi Factorial Risk Assessment for falls as “when a patient has documented evidence of assessment of at least five of the following six assessments:

1. Lying and standing blood pressure (LSBP)
2. Vision
3. Mobility
4. Delirium
5. Continence
6. Medication review

The same 2022 audit also identified performing high-quality Multi Factorial Falls Risk Assessment as a key performance indicator for the National Audit of Inpatient Falls (NAIF).

Positively, the report also found a “steady improvement in post-falls management thanks to adherence to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) quality standards on:

• Checks for injury before moving.
• Use of safe lifting methods to move the patient from the floor.

The NICE quality standards notes it is important that “older people who fall during a hospital stay are checked for signs or symptoms of fracture and potential for spinal injury before they are moved” and stresses the of a post-falls protocol to an effective falls strategy.
