Launched at the 2026 National Back Exchange Conference, the Carer Pro Lie-Flat Chair is our own next-generation acute hospital chair. Built on the success of the Sertain HILO Chair, it combines every desirable feature needed by critical care teams into one highly versatile lie-flat chair.

Getting critically ill patients moving safely and early has become one of the defining priorities in NHS critical care. The evidence linking prolonged bed rest to muscle wasting, delayed recovery and longer hospital stays is well established, and early mobilisation programmes are now a standard part of ICU and HDU practice.
But turning that into a reality depends on the equipment ward teams have to hand. Many hospital chairs are built for general ward use, not for the specific demands of critical care. Patients who need to lie genuinely flat for long periods often have lines and monitoring equipment attached, and need to be transferred safely between bed and chair sometimes several times a shift.
This is the need the Carer Pro has been designed to meet. Launched at the 2026 NBE Conference, this is our biggest seating intervention in the acute care market to date, built specifically for intensive care, high dependency and critical care wards.

Carer Pro Lie-Flat Chair
Where the backrest, seat and legrest meet, there’s usually a seam or a gap, which is fine for a short recline but a problem for patients who are positioned flat for hours at a time. Those seams become pressure points and a clinical risk area.
The Carer Pro has been designed with a single, continuous seating surface. When fully reclined, the backrest, seat and legrest are one seamless surface with high-risk pressure relief, turning the chair into a treatment couch.

Transferring a patient who is unconscious with IV lines, cannulas, and monitoring equipment attached can be one of the most challenging parts of early mobilisation.
The Carer Pro’s drop-down wings and sides open the chair up from either side, so staff have a smooth transfer surface and aren’t working around the armrests.

Four one-touch preset modes (Entry/Exit, Safe Transport, Relax and Lay Flat) cover the positions used most often on a critical care ward. It’s a small thing but makes a big difference on fast-paced shifts where staff are moving between multiple patients and equipment.
It’s also Sara Stedy compatible, meaning it works for standing routines that many ICU and rehab teams already use. The seat tilt assists entry and exit, with a seat height that reduces to 470mm for smaller patients.

A chair with more functions isn’t necessarily a better chair if nobody has time to use them under pressure. The Carer Pro’s simple intuitive handset has four one-touch modes (Entry/Exit, Safe Transport, Relax and Lay Flat) and can be fitted on both sides of the chair whichever side of the bed staff are working from, so the controls are within easy reach.

Dual foot pedals mean height can be adjusted hands-free if carers have sterile gloves on, or simply have their hands full while on the move.
For emergency situations, the Carer Pro has a one-pull CPR release that drops the chair to the lay-flat position in seconds, when speed is essential.
The wings and sides flip back easily with intuitive pull pins and spring-loaded mechanisms, taking the thinking out of transfers.
The continuous seat surface and easy-clean design support high infection control standards, with a plastic base cover to protect against fluid ingress. The highly durable Encore Studio vinyl upholstery has been tested to over 1,000,000 Martindale rubs to withstand heavy hospital use.
The central locking brakes are colour-coded and accessible from either side of the base, with 125mm Tente Linea twin castors to move easily around a busy care ward.
A retractable power cable reduces trip hazards, and a rear IV pole attachment point supports patients who need equipment alongside them during positioning and transfers.

Vivid Care has crafted specialist seating since 1972, and its chairs are used in more than 80% of NHS hospital trusts today. The Carer Pro is the company’s most significant investment yet in critical care seating, designed and tested with the clinical teams who use it every day.
It’s available to hire as well as buy, which is useful for trusts managing surge capacity, running a trial before committing to a full ward rollout, or covering a shorter-term need without using up capital budgets.

The Carer Pro was demonstrated at the 2026 National Back Exchange Conference, the UK’s leading annual event for moving and handling professionals. Delegates were impressed to see the transfer functionality and true lie-flat position, and discuss with the Vivid Care team.
If you didn’t make it to the show, you can get in touch with us to arrange a demonstration for your ward or care team. The full chair specification can be found on the Carer Pro product page.
The Carer Pro is the ultimate in terms of lie-flat seating for critical care: a genuine lie-flat position, and transfers that don’t put staff or patients at risk.
